A purpose-built shed for a new chapter in Flagstone Creek
After returning to Australia from England, Kathryn and Roger chose Flagstone Creek as the place to create their new home. Their plans are anything but conventional. The couple intend to build their house using traditional hay and mud construction, but before the house could take shape, they needed somewhere practical to establish the property and support the work ahead.
That meant the shed came first.
The family came across R&F Steel Buildings Gatton after speaking with neighbouring property owners in the Flagstone Creek area, where the R&F team had already completed a number of local projects. Those local recommendations led to a conversation about what they needed from their own building and ultimately to the design and construction of a substantial custom shed and workshop.
THE FIRST STAGE
The First Building on the Property
The new shed is the first major structure on the property and has been designed to provide a practical base while the family’s new home takes shape. The main building is a 9m span x 17.7m long gable shed, with a 3.6m eave height and 10-degree roof pitch. A 3m wide skillion extension runs the full length of the building, adding a further 53m² of covered space alongside the 159m² main shed. Together, the structures provide 212m² of covered space, giving the couple room for storage, workshop activities, vehicles and the practical jobs involved in establishing a new property.
Designed for the Next Stage
Three large oversized roller doors
With the house still to come, the shed needed to work hard from day one. The design provides flexible internal space for storage and workshop use, while the skillion extension creates additional sheltered space alongside the main building. Three 3m wide roller doors provide access to the main shed, complemented by windows, fly screens and a glass sliding door. Bradford Polyair Performa XHD (Extra Heavy Duty) Roof and Wall insulation was also included, helping make the building more practical and comfortable for the work and activities that will take place inside. As the property develops, the shed will remain an important part of how the couple use and manage the site.

One of the things that stands out about this project is how the relationship with R&F began. Rather than finding the team through a large advertising campaign or an online search, the couple heard about R&F through their neighbours – property owners nearby who had already worked with the Gatton team on a number of builds. For a rural community like Flagstone Creek, those local connections matter. When you’re building on acreage and investing in a substantial structure, being able to see work that has been completed nearby and speak to the people who have used the builder can carry a lot of weight. It’s also a reflection of how R&F has grown its presence across the Lockyer Valley — through local projects, relationships and recommendations from one property owner to the next.
